There are four ways to check-in with South African Airways: online check-in (24 hours to 2 hours before flight departure) ; mobile check-in; self check-in kiosks; bag drop counters.

Hand baggage allowance

The hand baggage allowance on South African Airways flights depends on the class of travel:

Economy Class: 1 piece of hand luggage and 1 laptop bag
First Class and Business Class: 2 pieces of hand luggage and 1 laptop bag
Maximum dimensions: 115cm (total of length + width + height); Maximum weight: 8kg

Checked baggage allowance

The checked baggage allowance also depends on the class of travel:

Economy Class: 1 piece up to 23kg
First Class and Business Class: 2 pieces up to 32kg each (exception: only 1 piece allowed on flights within South Africa or between Africa and Libreville/Douala).
Maximum dimensions: 158cm (total of length + width + height)
Passengers with baggage over 32kg will have to check it as cargo at cargo shipping rates.

Great flight overall but I found a squashed perfume box on my luggage when I arrived home,I suspect it was squashed between the Dar Es Salaam and Johannesburg flight,my question is what if I was searched at the airport,I suspect someone stole it from the duty free sales,took the bottle and stashed it in my bag ,not impressed at all,please check your air hostesses thoroughly

I booked South African Airwsys only to find that it was Airlink which only gave 30kgs luggage instead of 2times 23 kegs which is standard for SAA. I was very disappointed I paid 800ZAR for the extra bag from Joburg to Hre and in return in HRE for the same bag same weight they charged me USD 200 so in the end I basically paid double for the flight when I could have chosen another flight for much less with better conditions. This is total misrepresentation by South African and Air link. The 2 should be clearly explained in the booking process or have separate websites
